During our last visit to the Southsea market we saw Southsea Beach Cafe promoting their new fish nights throughout the summer 2015. With my husbands impending birthday and numerous happy visits to SBC we immediately booked our night off from the kids.

After weeks of impatiently waiting, our fish night finally came. On arrival we were pleasantly greeted by our waitress and a warm and relaxing atmosphere. It was really quite different from our previous trips (peak hours) but this was a good kind of different. The music wasn’t too loud and there wasn’t too much hustle and bustle in comparison to other bistro’s or restaurants.

For our starters we both decided to have something different, something we haven’t had before. I went for the smoked haddock and crab chowder served with local sour dough. Well, what can I say? It most certainly is a dish I need in my life more often! My husband had his first ever oysters which were served with wild garlic and parsley butter and parmesan brioche crumbs. He thoroughly enjoyed them and was a great place to sample his first ever oysters.

Choosing our mains was pretty easy. My husband is a sucker for moules and I’ve never tried seabass. The moules came in a lime, chilli, ginger and coriander sauce and the seabass was served with a chorizo, butter bean and tomato casserole.  These were both fantastic, and I was amazed at the size of the seabass. I was expecting a fillet, and had a whopper of a whole seabass on my plate and it was brilliant. Needless to say I ate the whole thing!

Desert was hot chocolate fondant and affogato. I’m not usually a desert person, but the ice-cream for the affogato was immense. After desert we treated ourselves to a prosecco cocktail with blueberries. This was pretty darn good, they said they will be trying out a new cockail each week which is a great idea.

We really enjoyed our trip to SBC without the kids for some great food, wine and atmosphere. Thank Fish it’s the Weekend is running throughout summer of 2015 every Friday and Saturday 7:30 – 11pm. Be sure to book early as I know they will be pretty busy!
